Model New York City Council

Are you interested in sharpening your leadership, critical-thinking and public speaking skills? Considering a career in public service or simply dedicated to improving the quality of life in your neighborhood? Then check out the Model New York City Council Project.

Each fall, Model City Council gives NYC high school students the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step into the shoes of a New York City Councilperson and experience city government from the inside. During four intensive Saturday sessions, faculty mentors will guide you through the ins and outs of political representation, the legislative process and what it means to be an active member of city government.

Discover what it takes to balance the needs of the people in your district with the needs of the public as a whole, and learn how civic involvement can have positive and long-lasting effects in your school, your community, and throughout New York City.

Put your knowledge and experience to use as you and your fellow Model City Council members debate and vote on a piece of legislation during a "stated meeting" in the Council's actual chambers in City Hall. Afterward, celebrate your accomplishments and meet elected City Council members at a reception hosted by CUNY.
