Hunter College

College Now at Hunter College offers college-credit courses for motivated high school students who would like to get a jump-start on their college education.

How It Works: Courses

1. Qualified students begin by taking one of about 13 College Now sections (also known as "cohort classes") in a wide variety of subject areas. Students from various New York City public high schools fill these classes, which are taught by Hunter College professors at the bustling 68th street campus.
2. After passing a cohort class with a grade of C or better, students are eligible to waive out of the cohort schedule and enter any (regularly scheduled) undergraduate course for which they fulfill the prerequisite(s).

Additional Perks

• a Hunter student ID, which you can use to explore the campus
• access to the college's library, computer labs, student study centers, and athletic facilities to support and cheer on the Hunter Hawks!
• an open invitation to the College Now office for refreshments, socializing, or just catching up on homework after the high school day

Important Insights

A College Now student enrolled in a physics class at Hunter notes that the experience has greatly enhanced her understanding of the subject—and of how college teachers teach. She was especially impressed that her professor "knew how to reach out to students and [apply] physics to the real world."

Another student, who took part in Hunter's Summer Musical Theater Program says, "I felt challenged by this course in a good way.  I liked how intense it was and I learned a lot of skills that I have wanted to know for a long time.  I feel like I have taken an important first step in my career."

Getting Started

1. Consult the list of Hunter's partner schools. If your high school is on the list, make a note of its Hunter College Now liaison. The liaison is the person you'll need to contact to see exactly what courses and activities are open to you, deadlines for enrollment, etc.
