How You Can Help

Tips for Getting the Most from College Now

Preparing for college can be stimulating and fun, but it's also work. Here are some areas where your CN student may benefit from extra support and encouragement:

  • Managing Time. In most cases, choosing College Now means your child has committed to an extended day and more out-of-class work. It's not always easy to fit everything in!

Tip: Students have told us it helps when adults check in to make sure they are structuring their time effectively and getting to all their work.

  • Clearing Space. In addition to carving out time for assignments, students need mental and physical space to get things done.

Tip: Students need a chunk of obligation-free, uninterrupted time—and relative quiet—for serious reading and writing.

  • Meeting Challenges. Students who take our classes may experience significant rewards. But they may also be frustrated if certain concepts seem particularly difficult or hard to grasp.

Tip: Students who feel overwhelmed by a class, or need help choosing an appropriate course, should be encouraged to seek help. They can speak to the teacher or the high school's CN liaison. Most CN students also have free access to college tutors and writing centers.

  • Getting Out and About. Because the most memorable learning often takes place outside of the schoolroom, some College Now activities require your permission.

Tip: A friendly, "Have anything for me to sign?" might unearth that permission slip from the bottom of the backpack.

Attend a CN Orientation

Many College Now programs welcome parents to their orientation sessions. Contact your child's CN liaison or campus staff at the appropriate college to learn about the next scheduled orientation or to ask questions about a specific course or program.

More Questions?

If you have any other questions about the program, you can contact the College Now Central Office. The Central Office coordinates CN across all 17 City University of New York undergraduate colleges.
