Teaching & Learning in College Now
College Now's goal is to support New York City's high school students in order to build the foundations for college success. As facilitators of that goal, College Now teachers help students to shape their post-secondary expectations and strengthen their academic preparation.
College Now programs, while maintaining their distinctiveness from campus to campus, share common notions of what constitutes a College Now course (or other activity) and what principles should inform teaching and learning in College Now classrooms.
The pages linked from this section provide details—and invite further exploration—of these program basics:
- Philosophy of Teaching. College Now promotes instructional strategies that encourage students to become independent learners.
- Types of College Now Courses and Activities. Skills and knowledge are the foundation for academic success. Each type of CN course or activity represents a carefully considered balance of academic content and skills integration.
- Professional and Curriculum Development. College Now teachers are learners, too. Accordingly, the program provides a range of opportunities for enhancing professional practice.
- Teaching and Learning Bibliography. This list of curriculum and professional development resources has helped shape our program's approach to teaching and learning.
- Curricula, Lesson Plans and Syllabi. This page currently links to course materials relating to college preparation and awareness activities. Developed and used in College Now programs throughout the University, these activities provide a useful complement to the program's college credit and discipline-based Foundations courses.
